A new government study suggests U.S. teen smoking rates reached an all-time low this year.
The study was a survey of American youth carried out by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The survey involved middle school students – which includes grades six through eight – and high school students in grades nine through 12. Nearly 30,000 students from 283 U.S. schools took part in the effort, which was carried out from January to May.
The study found that tobacco use among girls and Hispanic students fell. But it rose among American Indian and Alaska Native students. The survey also showed the current use of nicotine patches increased among white youth.

Even for a period of extreme weather, this autumn has had more than the usual weather disasters.
The Spanish province Valencia has seen the latest incident of massive and deadly flooding in Europe. Heavy downpours also hit France, Austria and Czechia this fall. Italy has had two major floods, once in September and then again in October.
More than 200 people have been killed in the flooding in Spain. At the same time, over half of the United States experiences an almost rain-free October.
There may be different ways of counting and attributing climate change and the problems it causes, but one thing is for certain: "Burning fossil fuels causes climate change and climate change causes death and destruction."

October 31 is Halloween. But many Americans have been preparing for the holiday for weeks. And businesses are hoping for good profits from Halloween purchases.
The National Retail Federation expects total Halloween spending in 2024 to reach about $11.6 billion. That sounds like a healthy amount, but it would be a drop from the year before. The N.R.F. says total Halloween spending in 2023 was a record-setting $12.2 billion.
Halloween traditions in America are linked to Celtic beliefs in ancient Britain. The Celts believed that spirits of the dead would return to their homes on October 31, the day of the autumn feast. Celts would build huge fires to frighten away any evil spirits that might return.

Some health officials say mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo appear to be stabilizing. The observation is a possible sign that the epidemic might be declining.
Mpox is also known as monkeypox. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the viral disease was first identified by scientists in 1958 when outbreaks of a “pox-like” disease appeared in monkeys. Until recently, most human cases involved people in central and West Africa who had contact with infected animals.
In recent weeks, the WHO says the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported about 200 to 300 confirmed mpox cases every week. That number is down from nearly 400 cases a week in July. A decrease has also been reported in Kamituga, where the new, more infectious variant of mpox first appeared.

An experimental satellite made out of wood has been launched into space. Japanese developers of the device say it is the first time a wooden satellite has ever been sent to space.
The small satellite, called LignoSat, launched aboard an uncrewed Cargo Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station. The satellite will later be released into orbit about 400 kilometers above Earth.
The satellite was built in the form of a box, with each side measuring about 10 centimeters. It was developed jointly by researchers at Kyoto University and Japanese homebuilder Sumitomo Forestry.
A spokeswoman for Sumitomo Forestry told the French news agency that the launch of the satellite was “successful.” She said the plan calls for the device to be released into orbit in about a month, when its strength and effectiveness will be tested.

Brazilian artist and activist Mundano recently used some unusual substances to paint a picture on a building in Sao Paulo. The paint included materials, such as ash and mud, collected from natural disasters.
Mundano created the mural to highlight the issue of climate change. Extreme weather events have been causing destruction across Brazil.
The mural is very large – over 30 meters high and 48 meters wide. The artist used ash from wildfires and mud from floods. His painting shows the gray remains of trees on a brown land so dry it is cracked. The picture represents the deforestation and severe drought in the Amazon rainforest.
The mural also shows Indigenous activist Alessandra Korap wearing a circle of flowers around her head. The artist says those messages are directed to Cargill, a massive soybean producer based in the United States.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has spread to 196 countries and regions and gained worldwide recognition for its unique strengths in disease prevention and control and rehabilitation, an official told a press conference on Thursday.

Chinese acupuncture and Taijiquan have been included in the UNESCO Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the Huang Di Nei Jing and Ben Cao Gang Mu, ancient Chinese classics on medicine, have been listed in the Memory of the World Register, said Wei Chunyu, an official with the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Every year, a large number of international students come to China to study TCM, and TCM products and services have been in great demand at the annual China International Fair for Trade in Services, Wei said.

China has made plans to better introduce TCM to the world, promote exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, and help build a global community of health for all, said the official.

Microsoft is expanding its artificial intelligence tool offerings to include “personal agents” which are designed to take over different human processes.

The American software company said the new offerings are designed to help users complete certain business activities with little or no human involvement. The agents are expected to be offered to some users starting in the coming weeks. A full release is expected sometime next year.

Microsoft has said its agents are designed to expand on so-called chatbots. A chatbot is an AI tool that can work by itself to produce human-level writing or discussion. Such systems – also known as generative AI – can also produce images and videos based on short text descriptions.

While chatbots perform some functions on their own, they also depend heavily on humans to operate and guide them. The idea behind AI agents is to give them the ability to take over whole business processes with little or no guidance from people.

Studies show that deep breathing can be an effective way to reduce tension, or stress, at work. But people may not think about their breathing while on the job.
Workers who sit at computers for long periods tend to take shallow breaths as their shoulders slowly rise. Workers who spend the day on their feet in retail or health care may be too busy to center their attention on breathing.
But there is good reason to stop what you are doing and take deep breaths, research suggests.
Long-lasting stress can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Experts at the American Heart Association say it can be as harmful as secondhand smoke. Research suggests deep-breathing exercises can lower a person’s blood pressure and reduce anxiety.
There are many benefits to deep breathing. For starters, it is free. It can be done anywhere. And unlike a 30-minute meditation practice, most deep breathing exercises do not take much time.

A new study reports that more than 800 million adults have diabetes worldwide. And more than half of those aged over 30 who have the condition are not receiving treatment.
Diabetes is a disease in which your blood sugar level is too high. If untreated, it can damage the heart, blood vessels, nerves and other organs.
The study, recently published in the publication Lancet, found that around 828 million people aged 18 and older had diabetes worldwide in 2022. Among those 30 and older, the study said 445 million, or 59 percent, were not receiving treatment.
It is the first worldwide evaluation based on more than 1,000 studies involving more than 140 million people.

The scientists said that the bees could tell the difference between the cancer breath and the laboratory copy of the healthy human breath 93 percent of the time. The scientists added that the bees could also tell the difference between different kinds of lung cancer.
The discovery could help doctors detect many cancers, including lung, breast, head and neck, and colorectal cancers, earlier than other methods. Saha says detecting cancers this way would be an improvement. “The reason is, many times we detect the cancer late,” when a growth has become too big to control easily. But, he added, when cancer starts growing the breath starts changing much earlier.
He hopes to develop a system that a patient will be able to breathe into and which can be carried around easily. This would deliver test results immediately.
“Hopefully, within the next five years, we'll have something to show that humans can be diagnosed using these insect brain disc sensors,” Saha said.
