Descartes argued that thought was the foundation of all knowledge while the senses might deceive us. This is materialist. However, Descartes also believed that the external world existed, which was independent of the human mind. This is materialist. In the Cartesian system, mind and matter are completely apart from one another. Descartes thus brought to completion the dualism of mind and matter which began with Plato.
