However, Descartes also believed that the external world existed, which was independent of the human mind. This is materialist. 关于柏拉图与笛卡尔的哲学思想的异同，不需要去深究。柏拉图是西方客观唯心主义哲学的始祖，他率先提出了身体与灵魂是割裂的这种观点，或者说有感性认识与理性认识等等，对应的英文就是mind and matter。
这种二元观点影响了笛卡尔，笛卡尔在他的基础之上有所接受和继承、以及发展，最终提出了自己的“二元论”。
