Both carry us toward distant places with different expectations.     In terms of distance and time, for long journeys—such as international travel or domestic trips spanning far northern and southern regions—flying is often the better choice. It saves time and offers higher efficiency.
For shorter domestic trips within 4 to 6 hours, high-speed rail is usually an excellent option. It provides comfort, scenic views along the way, and helps pass the time enjoyably.
    When considering cost, airfare tends to be higher and more volatile—discounts can drop to 30% off in low season, while peak seasons like Golden Week may see prices double. In contrast, high-speed rail tickets remain stable and affordable, often with discounts for students and seniors, making them more budget-friendly.
    As for comfort, economy class seats on planes typically offer less than 80 centimeters of legroom, and ear pressure during takeoff and landing can be uncomfortable. On high-speed rail, even second-class seats allow free movement, come with charging ports, and window seats offer views of mountains, rivers, villages, wheat fields, and grazing livestock—especially pleasant for families with children. The spacious aisles and convenient dining service also make the journey more relaxed compared to the confined cabin of an airplane.
    Every departure is an adventure into the unknown. To sum up, choose a plane if you’re in a hurry or traveling long distances; choose high-speed rail if you prefer a steady, scenic, and comfortable journey.
